Consultants design the structure, contractors are the ones in charge on a construction site
I know you can become chartered in both but which makes more money and if so is the difference very significant?

Usually the consultants are architects and the contractors are civil engineers. Consultants do not design the structure, that would be the designers job in a design office, Consultants only give advices to the owner about the design and its executing. Well usually the consultant who makes more money than the contractor, but that also depends on the type of the contractor (I mean branch or main contractor). Sure the main contractor makes more money than the consultant if he undertakes the project in both biding and executing.
