Unless you are a huge site with thousand of hits per day, it is not possible to make a worthwhile amount of money with Google Adsense because payment depends on people actually clicking on the ads.
Secondly, Google Adsense is now so common that people have gotten accustomed to it and irritated by it and so ignore the ads - no clicks means no cash

Blogs do not work really well with Adsense. Even the big bloggers are finding that they are better off using banner ads on a cost per impression basis to monetize the huge traffic their blogs get.

The problem with blogs and Adsense is the responsiveness of audience to the ads. People visit blogs to read about something — they are not on the lookout for ways to spend money.

Consider this: A travel website that provides information on travel to Spain will attract visitors looking for ways to arrange their travel and spend money on their vacation to Spain. Your site provides the info, but the ads will provide hotels, travel agencies, tourist destinations, car rentals — ads that are likely to get the attention of the users of your site. This is a site that will most likely do well with Adsense. However, if you are a gaming website where the main purpose of the user is to play games on your site, then Adsense will not perform as well.

To improve the performance of Adsense on your site, Google Adsense Help has good tips on where to put the ads on a blog (their blog heat map). Their tips are as follows: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=43869

    1. Blend the ads on your blog
    2. Experiment with multiple ad formats and locations
    3. Offer readers more options with search and referrals
    4. Improve site targeting

One other tip — choose a blog topic that attracts people looking for ways to spend money (example is a blog that reviews various cameras and photographic equipment); or blogs that attract audiences that advertisers find very desirable such as high income people or tech savvy folks.

I have alot of video sites with google adsense ads and I am not making much either. Some creative ways to do it is just by sending your blog post to your friends and having them send the post to their friends and so on. Make sure that the post is what your friends would want to read. The more viral your blog post becomes the more others will click on the ads.

To make good money with Adsense on blogs, you need to have good search engine ranking page (SERP) which attract more natural or organic visitors to your site. Organic visitors or traffic gives better impression and that leads to better click through rate (CTR). In return, Google will place ads with higher 'cost per click' on your site. If you want to make money with adsense on blog, you got to work on your search engine optimization (SEO).

it all comes down to two things

the traffic is your blog optimised for search engines? blog software such as wordpress has lots of seo plugins which go a good job.

do your ads blend in to the page?

we currently have a CTR of around 8 to 15%
