I need a good website where you don't have to pay money to join. Please if you know of one where I can sell my art or participate in a competition then your answer will be highly appreciated.

You can join for free and create free portfolios on:

    http://artscad.com
    http://www.wooloo.org
    http://www.artistsites.org

Also, if your paintings are quite good, you may try http://www.ArtExpoSite.net , however they take only good quality works and you have to send them 5 images of your paintings for approval. If you get approved they will create your portfolio for you for free, themselves - that way they have more control over quality of content displayed on their site. I think at the moment they will accept and process up to 10 images for free. It is run by a Non-Profit organization supporting artists, they don't charge any commissions and they will list your contact details (whichever ones you want listed) and your own website (if you have one) so that customers interested in your paintings can contact you directly and deal with you directly.

    Hope this helps!

i have not met any one who has made money online. they has lost.
arrange exhibitions locally, invite VIP to open, invite press for coverage for reviews, good or bad, take in the right spirit. keep price reasonable understanding the status of the locals. repeat this event once a year. u can even invite customers and take up assigned painting.
at time it is expensive for solo exhibition. few of u can jointly arrange and share the cost.
or any other convenient ways u can think of
