There are tons of scams like the two answers above me.
There are a few places that hire online customer service agents like (westathome.com). They're legit and have two call centers about 75 mi from my home. I applied with them before, but never heard from them. There are blog opportunities but they pay isn't enough to be considered. You can write for sites like associated content and ehow, but again… the pay isn't worth the effort. So, really there aren't too many legit opportunities. There is also eBay. You could unload old kids clothing and toys on there for some extra cash.

Education? Experience? Skills? What can you do? If you are an accountant or CPA, start up your own firm working from home. Marketing consultant? Graphic designer? Webmaster? What?
If you have no education, experience or skills, you have nothing to build on to obtain clients and build a real biz.

I'm sure they're not the only ones either, just the most popular. If you think about what they do it should be obvious to anyone who takes part in the rip off.
Oh I'm not saying they cheat the people who join, of course they wouldn't do that! The scam is perpetrated against the poor advertiser that is offering a nice bonus for people to try their product or service. These are honest businessmen and women who are just trying to make an honest buck and are willing to give in order to receive.
So along comes CashCrate and TreasureTrooper to exploit them, just like Fagin in Oliver Twist. Instead of picking up street orphans to train as pickpockets, they find Internet Surfers and train them instead. They teach them to sign up for theses offers and just before they have to pay, cancel everything and bring the money back to CashCrate and TreasureTrooper so you can keep a share.
Who do you think is making all the MONEY???? Just like Fagin, they have everyone scrambling to get a piece of the ill gotten gains.

Good luck!

Here are my suggestions on finding a legitimate opportunity that's right for YOU:
- Set your financial goals — Are you just looking for extra income or a potential full-time income? How long (and hard) are you willing to work to meet your goal?
- Determine if you are looking for a JOB or a BUSINESS — there is a distinct difference between the two and you want to focus your energies appropriately for the best results.
- If looking for a JOB, what are your marketable skills and previous experiences? If you are looking for a BUSINESS, go with your passions, things that interest and motivate you the most. Build a list and use that to begin your search. General rule of thumb: Never pay for a job (businesses, on the other hand, usually involve some expenses). I recommend checking out the Telecommuting Moms folder here at WAHM.com for leads on home JOBS. I also have some resources for freelance work and telecommuting jobs on my Work From Home site.
- Review your budget — know ahead of time what you are willing and able to invest into your business, including start-up costs and ongoing maintenance and promotion.
- Find a rep to contact, check out their websites, ask questions, do your own independent research. Check resources such as http://www.bbb.org for potential scams.

"If a company requires initial payment from you in order to work for them, they are not legitimate."
There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare.
If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as 'Best'.
