people always complain how they make too much money and i’m not exactly sure why they do make a lot of money, but it makes sense because millions of people or maybe less than that are watching these movies..and giving their money away for entertainment..plus..it’s less likely for someone to become famous

i mean, if you look at the box office numbers that they make in a week after a movie comes up, it’s a lot..besides, the actors don’t even get as much as the movie makes obviously..

if anyone understands this, please tell me

would it even be possible for teachers or doctors (which people complain about not getting enough money) to make that much..it just doesn’t seem like there is that kind of money to give them

OK, you’re asking a complicated question. There are various ways that celebrities get paid.

    1) Owning a business (for example Sean John)
    2) Getting paid by a business to use their fame etc. (example Michael Jordan on the Wheaties box)
    3) Obviously, working by performing shows, concerts, games, making movies, music, etc (Example Brittney Spears concert)
    4) Holding Copyrights to their works and getting paid royalites each time their merchandies is purchased (every snoop dogg album that you buy for 20$ gives snoop dogg 1$ etc)
    5) Celebrities actually get paid to show up places sometimes. Most have prices that range from $10,000 a night to $500,000 a night.

    I think that’s about it.

You seem to have it all figured out, so all I can really contribute is saying that you are exactly right.

If you are making a movie and you know that having Angelina Jolie in it will make 20 million more people come to see it, making an extra $20 million dollars for you, then you would be willing to pay her $15 million to appear in your movie.

Similarly, if paying some athlete $10 million to join your team is going to make your team worth more (because more people will watch on TV so advertisers will pay more or more people come to the stadium), it may pay for you to make the offer.

Of course, you never know exactly how much the star presence is worth, but you can have a pretty good idea, and contracts can reflect it (give the star a percentage of the take rather than a fixed fee, etc.)

As for doctors and teachers, most people do not think doctors don’t get paid well. At least in the U.S., doctors generally earn well over $100,000 per year:

Teachers, on the other hand, earn much less than doctors.
    http://www.educationworld.net/salaries_us.html
And their earnings are significantly below average for people with masters degrees:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States

One reason is that almost all teachers are hired by governments and governments aren’t willing or able to pay very much. (Compare the salaries of the President, and the Supreme Court judges with those of CEOs and private sector lawyers.)

Another reason is, that as you noted, there are many more teachers than stars. Paying each teacher just a little more can add up quickly.

Then there is the nature of the market. Most teachers are still women, and most are married so their income is not the only income in the household. Therefore they are willing to work for less than someone who has to support a household. And local boards of education take full advantage of this.

And there is the fact that the school year isn’t a full year. (Which doesn’t mean that teachers can get jobs for the summer)

Whether this is “fair” or not is a matter of opinion.
