If they're asking for money or a credit card account, its a scam.

I am sure that it is a scam because you shouldn't have to pay taxes. If you have any questions you should contact the better business bureau they will let you know. You can also take it to the bank that you bank at and ask them to help you figure out if it is fake it will take sometime to get the answer, but their is always a way.

If you got to put out money to collect, it's a scam

Whatever personal information they ask for make sure you do not give it to them. Make sure that when you go to the bank you only put the check for deposit. You can ask them to call you immediately after they have validated that the check is not a bouncing one. Good luck. Keep safe.

Your simply asking the question leads me to believe you already know the answer. You should never have to give out personal information OR deposit something into your checking account. RED FLAG! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't risk it.
