They say another person bought the same stove on the same day and later returned it. By some mistake they gave me credit (My card had been lost and cancled at the time).

Yes you have to pay them back. It isn't yours don't be a thief.

it will eventually be traced back to you and if you try to hide it, you could be charged with theft is my guess. Best to come clean…you'll feel better and maybe you'll get a gift certificate for your efforts.

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes that legally you have to return the money and morally you definately have to.
If by mistake you left your car keys in your car, and someone drove it away — do they get to keep your car?
That $500 doesn't belong to you. Return it.

WHY WOULD THEY GIVE CREDIT TO A LOST AND CANCELED CARD? They will probably find out about the error. If you don't return it I would wait at least 2 and maybe 3 months to spend it, unless you can cover the mistake if they do catch it.

Legal obligation? No. Moral obligation, yes. But no worries, they will find the error next month and take back the money so don't spend it just yet. I guarantee you. And if for some reason they don't. You just sold your integrity and honest for $500. That's basically what it costs to sell you out and make you a thief. Not a very high price for your soul.
